Opened in december 1916, the building of the Coliseo Albia Theater was in the first instance designed to have theatre uses and spectacles, included circus uses, because one of its main promotors was also the owner of El Ensanche Theater-Circus, Mr. Ramón Goikoetxea. Coliseo Albia Theater wanted to take advantage of the fire suffered by Arriaga Theater and the enormous gap this one left in the cultural and leisure programming of the city
Very soon, the varied programme of the theater, that used to programme every kind of genres and theatrical styles, from dramas and comedies, through every type of variety shows and other musical and circus spectacles, to operas and zarzuelas, was enlarged with the reproduction of films. “Falsa amistad” (false friendship) was the first film ever reproduced here.
During the next following 20 years, the theater used to publish a magazine with a print run of 10.000 copies once a week, which puts in evidence the true importance of this cultural resource.
During almost the whole life of the theater it became the home of the wellknown Bilbao Opera Season (nowadays performed at the Euskalduna Palace). Bilbao is very devoted to this artistic discipline of Bel canto. Otelo was the first operatic performance at this Coliseo de Albia. Over its almost 50 opera seasons under the name of Coliseo Theater, they have shown their gift great stars like Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, Luciano Pavarotti or Alfredo Kraus.
Today, these spaces that, as the years passed, saw how the culture was defeated, taken down by new realities and leisure options, take pride in that they once used to be, in all that beauty and art they spreaded.
These days, Coliseo Albia, besides giving its name to the theater, do so also with an excellent 4 stars hotel, Sercotel Coliseo hotel, which is in perfect conditions to please the highest demands, well-assorted with other spaces devoted to leisure uses and restaurant businesses. This way, at the lower floors of the building we will find two resources: Great Casino Nervión and Ibaigane Restaurant.
Sercotel Coliseo Bilbao is located on the central area of the city. With a chic and trend-setting decoration, this hotel offers 97 wide designer rooms, wifi net in all its rooms and even a little gym. It allows the access for pets under 5 kg for a fee of 30 euros/day.
