One day, a sheeperd named Rodrigo de Baltzategi moved away from his flock when he heard the tinkling of a cowbell coming from the forest. Suddenly, he though it could come from one of his sheeps but, however, he come across an image of the Virgin at a hawthorn, with a cowbell which was moved by the wind flow. It is that way how the history of this Sacred setting started. This encounter, which took place in 1468, was the starting point of a long history that still today remains alife.
In addition to discover all the values which encloses the Sanctuary, the hotel is an exceptional starting point to visit Arrikrutz caves or Gomiztegi Shepher´s school, knowing the monumental heritage of Oñati or, for instance, making a countless number of hiking tours withing this area.
Arantzazu Sanctuary is a worldwide reference of the religious architecture and art, specially because of its current Basilica (1950-1955, considered by experts as the best religious construction of the XXth century), which results from the joint work of three Basque artist awarded with the Prince of Asturias prize: Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida and Nestor Basterretxea. In addition to them, in this work took part other great artists, like Saénz de Oiza, Xabier Alvarez de Eulate, Lucio Muñoz or Xabier Egaña.
Hotel Santuario de Arantzazu finished in 2008 the full renewal of the building, designing its facilities to offer the highest comfort.
