Elorrio, Oñati and Arantzazu

The inner Basque Country is a natural area full of hidden treasures. We will visit the beautiful medieval village of Elorrio, a typical stone village crowded with Palace Houses and coats of arms. Then we will visit the oldest University of the Basque country in the village of Oñati, one of the most beautiful villages in Gipuzkoa. Finally, the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, located up the mountain in a unique environment.

Departure from Bilbao at 9:00 AM to make a half day tour to the interior of the Basque Country through villages and towns like Elorrio, Oñati and Arantzazu. The visit starts in Durango, the capital city of the county which shows in its urbanism a medieval structure. This area constitutes the entering point to Urkiola Natural Park, zone that already preserves flocks of sheeps, and where, still today the cheese is made to the traditional way.

Known as Little Basque Switzeland, this area of Biscay, mainly its mountains, are lands of hundred of legends and traditions linked to mythical creatures of the Basque cosmogony.

Leaving behind Durango, we will enter Atxondo Valley and following road towards Gipuzkoa we will come across Elorrio, a burg of the eighteen ones at the historic territory of Biscay, which apart from a good piece of wall still conserves a huge number of wonderful manor houses. In Elorrio we will visit Portal de Don Tello, Arespakotxaga, Tola, Urkizu, Olazabal and Casa Jara Palaces, and at its outskirts Argiñeta, a small early medieval necropolis littered with carved in stone stelles and sarcophagus.

From Elorrio we will take towards Oñati, the biggest monumental complex in Gipuzkoa. After having seen some of its most important monuments as the oldest university in the Basque Country (inaugurated in 1560), we will ascend through a path surrounded by cliffs to reach the most important Santuary of Gipuzkoa and probably from all the Basque Country. It is the Santuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu, a compendium of the best of the Basque modern art, work of several of the most important Basque artists of all times (Oteiza, Chillida or Nestor Basterretxea, among others), managed by the Franciscan Order.

After having visited Arantzazu, we will start the way back to Bilbao, where we will arrive around 14:00 hours to end our “Elorrio, Oñati and Arantzazu” route.
